How Often Should You Book a Massage?
“How often should I book a massage?” is a question we’re asked regularly here at Beyond Bliss.
The honest answer is that there isn’t one perfect schedule for everyone. Your ideal routine depends on how your body feels, your lifestyle, your reasons for having massage and, of course, what comfortably fits your time and budget.
Some people visit us for a monthly reset, while others book more regularly when they’re experiencing muscular tension or going through an especially busy or stressful period.
Massage for General Relaxation and Wellbeing
If your main goal is relaxation and maintaining your general wellbeing, booking a massage every four to six weeks can be a lovely rhythm.
It gives you something to look forward to while creating regular space to slow down, switch off and reconnect with yourself.
You don’t need to wait until your shoulders are somewhere near your ears or your body feels completely exhausted. Massage can form part of your ongoing self-care rather than becoming something you only consider when tension has already built up.
Massage for Stress and Mental Overload
Stress doesn’t only affect the mind. It can show up physically through tight shoulders, a clenched jaw, headaches, restlessness and difficulty switching off.
During particularly demanding periods, you may benefit from a massage every two to four weeks. Once you begin to feel more settled, you might choose to increase the time between appointments.
Gentler treatments such as Swedish massage, aromatherapy massage, hot stone massage or Indian Head Massage can be beautiful choices when you need warmth, comfort and time away from the noise.
Massage for Muscular Tension
If you’re experiencing persistent muscular tightness, your therapist may suggest booking several appointments closer together initially.
For example, you might begin with treatments every one to three weeks before moving towards a maintenance appointment every four to six weeks. The best frequency will depend on the area being treated, how your body responds and what may be contributing to the tension.
Deep tissue or bamboo massage may be suitable when you prefer firmer, more focused work, while Swedish massage can be adapted to combine relaxation with attention to specific areas.
Massage should never feel like a one-size-fits-all treatment. Your therapist will discuss the pressure with you and tailor each appointment to how your body feels that day.
Massage for an Active Lifestyle
Regular exercise, physically demanding work and repetitive movement can all contribute to tired or tight muscles.
If you have a particularly active routine, massage every two to four weeks may help you stay aware of developing tension and give your body time to recover. During quieter periods, you may decide that less frequent maintenance appointments are enough.
Massage can complement an active lifestyle, but it shouldn’t replace appropriate medical care, physiotherapy or rehabilitation following an injury.
Massage for Occasional Self-Care
There is absolutely nothing wrong with booking a massage only when you feel you need one.
Perhaps you’ve had a difficult week, you’re approaching an important event or your body is simply asking you to slow down. A one-off treatment can still offer valuable time for rest and relaxation.
However, if you regularly find yourself waiting until you’re completely overwhelmed or uncomfortable, a more consistent schedule may help you create space for yourself before reaching that point.
Listen to Your Body
Your body often gives you little signs that it may be time to book another appointment.
You might notice:
Tightness returning to your back, neck or shoulders
Feeling physically heavy or tired
Difficulty relaxing at the end of the day
Increased tension during stressful periods
Your usual movement beginning to feel restricted
That familiar feeling of desperately needing an hour to yourself
You don’t have to ignore these signs until they become impossible to miss.
Can You Have Massage Too Often?
More massage isn’t automatically better. Your body needs time to respond and recover, particularly after deeper or more targeted work.
Your therapist will consider the style and intensity of the treatment, your health, your comfort and how you felt following previous appointments. Always mention any new symptoms, injuries, medical diagnoses or changes to your medication during your consultation.
If you have unexplained or severe pain, a recent injury or concerns about whether massage is suitable, seek advice from an appropriate healthcare professional first.
Finding the Right Routine for You
As a general guide:
Every one to three weeks may suit a short period of focused support for muscular tension.
Every two to four weeks may suit ongoing stress, an active lifestyle or regular tension.
Every four to six weeks can work well for relaxation and general maintenance.
Occasional appointments are still worthwhile when that best suits your needs.
These are flexible examples rather than strict rules. Your massage schedule should support your wellbeing without becoming another commitment that creates pressure.
