How to Prepare for Your First Holistic Therapy

4 min read

Booking your first holistic therapy can feel exciting, but it’s completely normal to have a few questions too.

What should you wear? Do you need to bring anything? What happens when you arrive? And most importantly, are you expected to know exactly which treatment you need?

The simple answer to that last question is no.

Your therapist will guide you through the experience, explain what will happen and make sure the treatment feels comfortable and appropriate for you. A little preparation can help you arrive feeling more relaxed and ready to enjoy your appointment.

Choose a Treatment That Feels Right

Holistic therapy is a broad term covering many different treatments, including massage, reflexology, Reiki, sound healing, holistic facials and head and scalp therapies.

You don’t need to understand every technique before booking. Begin by thinking about what you would like from your appointment.

Would you like to ease muscular tension? Do you need help slowing down after a stressful period? Would you prefer a hands on treatment, an energy therapy or something focused entirely on rest and relaxation?

Read through the treatment descriptions and choose the experience that feels most suited to you. If you’re still unsure, your therapist can help you decide.

Complete Your Consultation Honestly

Before your treatment, you’ll be asked to complete a consultation form and discuss relevant health information with your therapist.

This may include medical conditions, injuries, allergies, medication, pregnancy and any recent changes to your health. You may also be asked what you hope to gain from the treatment.

This information helps your therapist decide whether the treatment is suitable and whether anything needs to be adapted.

Please never feel embarrassed about mentioning a health condition, sensitivity or concern. Your information will be treated respectfully and confidentially.

Arrive With a Little Time to Spare

Rushing through the door after battling traffic or searching for somewhere to park isn’t the calmest beginning to your treatment.

Try to arrive around five to ten minutes before your appointment, particularly if it’s your first visit. This gives you time to settle, complete any necessary information and speak to your therapist without feeling hurried.

At Beyond Bliss Wellness Centre, you’ll find us at 43 West Portland Street in Troon.

Wear Something Comfortable

Comfortable clothing is always a good choice, particularly for therapies where you remain fully clothed.

For reflexology, you’ll normally remove only your shoes and socks. For Reiki or sound healing, you’ll remain clothed throughout, so soft and relaxed clothing can help you feel more settled.

For massage or facial treatments, your therapist will explain what clothing needs to be removed. You will be given privacy to change and will remain appropriately covered throughout the treatment.

Only the area being treated will be uncovered, and you should never feel pressured to remove more clothing than feels comfortable.

Eat and Drink Normally

There’s no need to follow a complicated routine before your appointment.

Try to avoid eating a very heavy meal immediately beforehand, as lying down may feel uncomfortable. A light meal or snack is usually more suitable if your appointment falls around a mealtime.

Stay normally hydrated throughout the day, but there’s no need to force yourself to drink excessive amounts of water before or after a treatment.

Avoid Alcohol Before Your Appointment

It’s best to avoid alcohol before receiving a holistic therapy.

Alcohol can affect how you feel physically, influence your awareness and make it harder to communicate clearly during your consultation and treatment.

If you arrive under the influence of alcohol or recreational drugs, your therapist may be unable to safely continue with the appointment.

Let Your Therapist Know What You Prefer

Your treatment should feel comfortable and personal to you.

Tell your therapist if you prefer lighter or firmer pressure, would like an area avoided, feel uncomfortable with a particular technique or need help getting comfortable on the treatment bed.

You can also mention preferences relating to music, lighting, conversation or room temperature where these can reasonably be adjusted.

Some clients enjoy chatting throughout their appointment, while others want to completely switch off. There’s no right or wrong choice.

Ask Questions

You’re welcome to ask what will happen before the treatment begins.

Your therapist can explain the techniques they will use, the areas being treated and how long each part of the appointment is likely to last.

If you don’t understand something or feel uncertain at any point, please say so. A good therapist will want you to feel informed, safe and comfortable.

You remain in control throughout your appointment and can ask for the pressure to be changed, request a pause or stop the treatment at any time.

Give Yourself Time Afterwards

If possible, avoid packing your schedule immediately after your appointment.

Give yourself a little time to return to your day gently. You might want to take a quiet walk, enjoy a warm drink or simply sit for a few minutes before rushing into your next task.

You may feel deeply relaxed, sleepy or simply quieter than usual. Every person and every treatment can feel different, so listen to what your body needs.

Your therapist will give you any relevant aftercare advice before you leave.

What If You Feel Nervous?

Feeling nervous before a first treatment is completely understandable, especially if you aren’t sure what to expect.

Let your therapist know when you arrive. They can take a little extra time to explain the treatment, answer your questions and help you feel settled.

There’s no expectation for you to instantly relax, clear your mind or experience anything in a particular way. You simply need to arrive as you are.
