Sound Healing for Beginners: What to Expect
If you’ve never experienced sound healing before, the idea of attending your first soundbath can feel both exciting and a little mysterious.
What actually happens? Do you need to meditate? What should you bring? And what if you can’t switch your thoughts off?
The lovely thing about a soundbath is that you don’t need any previous experience. You simply arrive, make yourself comfortable and allow the sounds and vibrations to surround you.
Here at Beyond Bliss Wellness Centre in Troon, our soundbath sessions with Pammi from The Soul Tree combine sound healing, vibrational energy healing and Reiki within our calming studio.
Here is everything you need to know before joining us.
What Is Sound Healing?
Sound healing is a complementary wellbeing practice that uses tones, frequencies and vibrations to create an immersive and relaxing experience.
Different instruments may be played throughout a session, each producing its own layers of sound and vibration. Rather than actively listening in the way you would to a song, you’re invited to lie back and allow the sounds to wash over and around you.
A group sound healing experience is often called a soundbath because you are completely surrounded by sound. There is no water involved, so you can safely leave your swimming costume at home!
What Happens During a Soundbath?
When you arrive, you’ll choose a comfortable space within the studio and settle down with your mat, blanket and anything else you need to feel supported.
Pammi will welcome the group and explain what to expect before the session begins. You may be guided through some gentle breathing or relaxation to help you settle into the space.
Once you’re comfortable, the sound healing begins.
The tones may become softer, deeper or more powerful at different points. Some sounds may feel close while others appear to move around the room, creating a beautifully immersive experience.
Reiki and vibrational energy healing are also incorporated throughout Pammi’s sessions at Beyond Bliss.
At the end, there will be time to return your awareness to the room gradually. You won’t be expected to jump up and rush straight back into the world.
Do I Need to Know How to Meditate?
Not at all.
You don’t need to clear your mind, follow a complicated visualisation or reach a particular state.
Your thoughts may wander. You might think about your shopping list, tomorrow’s appointments or something completely random. That is perfectly normal.
When you notice your mind becoming busy, gently bring your attention back to the sounds, your breathing or the feeling of your body resting against the mat.
There is no right or wrong way to experience a soundbath.
What Does Sound Healing Feel Like?
Everyone experiences sound differently.
You may notice the vibrations physically within or around your body. Some people experience a sense of warmth, tingling or heaviness, while others simply enjoy listening to the changing tones.
You may feel calm and deeply relaxed. You might drift in and out of sleep, become more aware of your emotions or feel refreshed afterwards.
It’s also completely normal to have a quieter experience without any dramatic sensations. You don’t need to see colours, feel energy moving or have a spiritual experience for the session to be worthwhile.
What Should I Wear?
Wear soft, comfortable clothing that allows you to relax fully.
Your body temperature can drop slightly when you’re lying still, so cosy layers are a good idea. Warm socks are always welcome, particularly during the cooler months here in Troon.
You don’t need to dress for exercise as there are no strenuous movements involved.
What Should I Bring?
Bring anything that will help you feel comfortable while lying down.
A yoga mat provides cushioning from the floor, while a blanket helps you stay warm. You may also want to bring a pillow for your head and a bolster or rolled blanket to place underneath your knees.
An eye mask can help reduce distractions, but it isn’t essential.
Comfort is much more important than looking perfectly serene. If you need three blankets, two pillows and the fluffiest socks you own, bring them!
What If I Can’t Lie on the Floor?
Please don’t worry if lying flat on the floor isn’t comfortable or suitable for you.
Speak to Pammi before the session so that a more supportive position can be considered. You may prefer additional cushions, side lying support or a seated position.
The aim is for you to feel safe and settled, not to remain uncomfortable because you think everyone must experience the session in exactly the same way.
What If I Fall Asleep?
Falling asleep during a soundbath is very common and nothing to feel embarrassed about.
Your body may be responding to the opportunity to rest, particularly if you’ve arrived after a busy or emotionally demanding week.
A little snoring has never ruined a soundbath. If anything, it shows you’ve managed to properly switch off!
Is Sound Healing Loud?
Some instruments can create powerful sounds and strong vibrations, while others are much softer and more delicate.
The volume and intensity will naturally change during the session. If you’re particularly sensitive to sound, experience tinnitus or have concerns about noise levels, speak to Pammi before booking.
Ear protection may be helpful for some people, depending on their individual needs.
Is Sound Healing Suitable for Everyone?
Sound healing is generally enjoyed as a gentle wellbeing experience, but it may not be suitable for everyone.
Speak to the practitioner before attending if you’re pregnant, have epilepsy, use a pacemaker or another implanted medical device, experience significant sound sensitivity or have a health condition that could affect your comfort or safety.
Sound healing is a complementary practice. It should not replace medical treatment, mental health support or advice from a qualified healthcare professional.
How Might I Feel Afterwards?
You may feel deeply relaxed, sleepy, refreshed or emotionally lighter after your soundbath.
Try to give yourself a little time before rushing into another commitment. Move slowly when sitting up and standing, and follow any guidance provided at the end of the session.
A quiet evening, warm drink and early night can be a lovely way to continue the sense of calm.
Everyone responds differently, so listen to what your body needs.
How Often Can I Attend a Soundbath?
There is no fixed schedule you need to follow.
Some people enjoy attending regularly as part of their wellbeing routine, while others come along whenever they feel drawn to the experience or need some dedicated time to pause.
Choose a rhythm that feels comfortable and realistic for you.
